 The
School
Having decided to learn, or to improve your sailing, the choice
is yours: either to teach yourself or to be taught professionally.
The former may sometimes be cheaper, but it is less fraught, more
fun, and also quicker to learn with us, under the guidance of a
qualified instructor.
Being inland, we have neither tides nor currents to consider, but
the winds present their own special challenge. The school's lake
frontage is at Glenridding (at the southern end of the lake) where
the principal and chief instructor has been teaching since 1972.
We are deliberately a small family business, so as to ensure a friendly
atmosphere and personal attention. The school supports over fifteen
boats from basic trainers to high performance racing dinghies. We
enjoy teaching individuals, families and groups of all ages, from
eight to seventy-plus.
Since everyone wears a life jacket or buoyancy aid at all times
afloat, it is not necessary for our students to be able to swim.

Clothing
It is strongly advised that all students bring with them at
least two complete changes of warm clothing, a woollen hat and waterproofs,
if you have some already. Trainers or sailing boots are the most
suitable form of footwear. Life Jackets or buoyancy aids are included
in the charge of the course.
Insurance
All boats and people are insured.

Accommodation
Penrith is only just over four hours by train from London, and
is also a centre for long distance buses; we meet either if required.
Accommodation can either be provided here, or arranged for you,
if required, at a good local guest house, hotel, selfcatering unit,
camping or caravan site. Some of these are within easy walking distance
of our lake frontage, the rest being just a short drive away.
Other activities at The Spit
Traditional boats and dinghy hire, canoeing, kayaking and also
wind surfing and launching for all available at The Spit. Details
can be found in the Glenridding Sailing Centre.
G & J Wind Surfing and other outdoor pursuits available.
